This week is National Tourism Week and Lafayette Travel is already planning for life after the pandemic.

Lafayette Travel CEO Ben Berthelot says the local tourism industry lost more than $45 million because of canceled meetings, conventions, and sporting events.

Berthelot says locals will be key to restarting the tourism economy.

"Research has shown that once travel does reopen for the country and the world that people won't just be hopping on a plane," explained Berthelot. "So we're going to have to rely on regional travel, on statewide travel, and staycations, and then drive-market travel initially to get us going back again."
