The Town of Iota is holding a fundraiser for a family who lost their child to drowning.

The fundraiser for the Brown family will be on Sunday at the Iota Veterans Pavilion starting at 10:00 a.m. and ending at 1:00 p.m.

City officials say that the child died following an accidental drowning at a residential pond. The family had just moved to Louisiana  from San Antonio when the accident occurred. The drowning happened sometime in April of this year according to Mayor Cody Leckelt.

“The family had moved to send their children to school in this area and for a better opportunity to find a job in this area,” Leckelt said.

A church member alerted the mayor to the incident who put together the benefit to help the family. He says that Sunday, burgers and other foods will be available to purchase for those who attend. All items have been donated for the event on Sunday.

“Once the praying started going around we stared a hamburger benefit and everything is donated from patties to buns everything has been donated we have I think enough donations to cook over fifteen hundred hamburger,” Leckelt added.

Mayor Leckelt stressed that the fundraiser was set up by himself and church members. The family never reached out for assistance.

For tickets to help this family you can contact Mayor Cody Lecklet 337-717-8511, Jamie Doucet 337-384-8248 or Carrie Leckelt 337-224-2538.

Cash donations are also accepted.
