The Acadia Parish man who was rescued by two men last month during a house fire has died.

That update, according to the family of 70-year-old James Burnett Sr.

Burnett, who used a wheelchair was badly injured in the house fire on March 20, 2019, on Jefferson Avenue in Estherwood.  According to officials, Burnett suffered several burns.

He died early Monday morning.

According to authorities, the Burnett was able to drag himself just outside of his house near the carport, but it’s the actions of two men that they say helped save his life that day.

Cooper and Brandon Bertrand say they were outside taking out the trash when they noticed the smoke down the street. He was pulled to safety and taken to a local hospital.

The family says that Burnett died from his injuries in that fire. The cause, they say, was due to an electrical shortage.

Burnett’s family says that no public funeral services will be held but a private family memorial will be set at a later date.

The family asks that donations in Burnett’s name be made to The Burn Center at Lourdes Foundation.
