LAFAYETTE, La. — Cities across the country have had to cancel annual events and celebrations this year on Martin Luther King Day because of the pandemic, but the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity here in Lafayette decided to take advantage of the day to give back to their community in an effort to spread Dr. King's message.

"I don't mind coming out here when it's for a good cause, especially on my day off," said Kendrick Johnson, director of community service for Alpha Phi Alpha. "I enjoy being out here with all of my brothers just being able to make a difference whatever little difference that may be."

Normally, the fraternity hosts a banquet to celebrate and honor Dr. King, but because of the pandemic members of Alpha Phi Alpha had to change their plans.

Members of the fraternity, along with other organizations and fraternities throughout the community, walked down Martin Luther King Jr. Drive picking up trash in an effort to help beautify the community.

"We felt that this was something that we had to show" said Lionel Blackman, fraternity president. "Most of us don't live directly in this community, and we wanted to be able to show the individuals that live in the community that we can come out and beautify their community."
