The 2020 Democratic National Convention is mostly virtual this year. Typically, delegates from each state head to the conventions to take part, but not this year.

Like everyone else, they're watching from home. However, they're still taking part in the political process.

The convention is one like no other and it's a new experience for representative Dustin Miller, who is a democratic delegate.

"This is my first time experiencing it, so it's a bummer. I wish I could be out there right now in person, enjoying the first convention that I get to attend," Miller said.

He plans on spending the week watching from home.

"Good thing is my wife and family can enjoy it with me," Miller said. "We're going on the computer and watch everything get kicked off today."

The republican convention will be a similar experience with it being virtual.

"Conventions have a very interesting effect," Gabi Vitela, who's a visiting professor at UL said. "There's all the speeches, rallying and usually a convention bump after seeing the best the party has to offer."

Vitela explained how the conventions could impact elections.

"This year with it being virtual, there's an opportunity for both the DNC and RNC to really focus on using the resources, they'd normally use to put on a convention with, to invest in the state party. That's going to be a big factor. Localizing the state parties because Biden and President Trump can't necessarily campaign in a normal way."

Meanwhile, Miller says he'll still be able to connect with others just virtually. While it's not the in person atmosphere he hoped for, he says it's still exciting and will be a busy week.

"It was the safest way. It's not just about protecting the delegates and protecting the potential presidential candidate it's about protecting all citizens."
