A former police chief of the City of Rayne has died.
George Melancon, Sr. spent 16 years in the position in Rayne. He died Sunday February 2, 2020, at the age of 81. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at 2:00 p.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rayne.
Visitation will be held on Monday, February 03, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. in the Duhon Funeral Home Chapel in Rayne. A Rosary will be recited on Monday at 7:00 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will resume on Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. until time of services.
According to his obituary, Melancon was a policeman for four years before becoming Chief of Police for Rayne. He served as head of the police department from 1970 -1978 and again in 1998 - 2006.
