Note (11/18): After further investigation, it was determined the defendant in the standoff did not fire shots at deputies. APSO has requested that the charges of attempted first degree murder be declined by the judge, and they have been removed by the magistrate at the request of APSO as of Wednesday, November 18. Other charges remain in effect.

A Church Point man has been arrested after an hours-long standoff with Acadia Parish Sheriff's Deputies.

According to Sheriff KP Gibson, while deputies were investigating a complaint, they discovered an individual believed to have outstanding arrest warrants. The suspect fled as deputies attempted to confirm his identity.

Deputies pursued the man to a residence, where he entered and was later discovered hiding in the attic. As authorities began to enter the attic opening, the suspect fired shots at the deputies.

The attic area was cleared and a perimeter was set up. Gibson said family members were able to convince the suspect to surrender without further incident after a two-hour standoff.

The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Jiveston Hebert, was transported and booked into the Acadia Parish Jail. He is facing 5 counts of FTA bench warrants, felony; 6 counts of attempted first degree murder of a peace officer; 1 count of resisting by giving false identity; 1 count of resisting by flight; and 1 count of convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
