Acadia Sheriff warns of scams targeting senior citizens

The Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office is issuing an alert following the report of several scams targeting senior citizens in the parish.

Sheriff K.P. Gibson says that deputies have received several complaints regarding a Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes scam and others involving the IRS, outstanding warrant claims and private Facebook messages.

While some of the attempts have not been successful, the sheriff's office explains that some senior citizens in the parish have been taken advantage of by scammers.

In several cases, deputies report that scammers have convinced seniors to send money over a few weeks or even a few months.

The sheriff's office hopes that family members will get involved with elderly relatives and help them understand the signs of a potential scam.

Gibson says daily checks should be made to the bank accounts of elderly family members. As scam victims, they may not discuss transactions in fear of not receiving what scammers claims they will receive.

For more information, parish residents are urged to call local law enforcement for direction or to answer questions about these scams.
