Shot St. in New Iberia Renamed in Honor of Velma Lee Perrodin

On Saturday morning, the city of New Iberia changed the name of Shot St. to Velma Lee Lane in honor of the late Velma Lee Perrodin.

Perrodin passed away in 2016 after running a day care center near her home on Shot St. for years. She was also the president of an organization that mentored and tutored children in the community.

Perrodin’s daughter, Letitia Perrodin Houston, says her mother, “came and brought life to this area by opening up a day care and giving jobs to mothers who had no skills in doing anything else, and brought hope to the area.”

The late Velma Perrodin is the first African American woman to have a street in the city named in her honor.
