Louisiana spellers compete at Scripps National Spelling Bee

The Scripps National Spelling Bee began its first day of stage competition at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.

The 92nd annual Spelling Bee started on Monday, May 27 with spellers taking a preliminaries test before moving on to Round 2 Tuesday morning.

565 spellers will take the stage today. Group 1 began at 7:00 am. Round 2 of the competition will end at 4:35 pm.

Six spellers from Louisiana will be vying for the title of the nations top speller. They competed in Round 2 with Group 2 (Spellers 115-228) at 8:45 am Tuesday. All six spellers made it past round 2

  • Devika Dua (13) – Speller No. 126 – Ruston
    (Round 2 Word – synusia – Correct)
  • Bre’Ann Washington (14) – Speller No. 135 – Monroe
    (Round 2 Word – weltschmerz – Correct)
  • Cal Alexander (14) – Speller No. 194 – Shreveport
    (Round 2 Word – peculate – Correct)
  • Alyssa Walker (14) – Speller No. 198 – Youngsville
    (Round 2 Word – satrap – Correct)
  • Zaila Avant-garde (12) – Speller No. 211 – Harvey
    (Round 2 Word – nubilous – Correct)
  • Isaac Phillips (13) – Speller No. 221 – Ponchatoula
    (Round 2 Word – olecranon – Correct)

50 spellers will eventually move onto the finals round on Thursday, May 30 at 7:30 am.
