JEANERETTE, La (KATC) — The railroad crossing across highway 90 near LA 85 in Jeanerette has been a cause for concern for years. Some accidents like Monday’s two vehicle crash involving an 18-wheeler aren’t life-threatening, while others have turned deadly.

In 2017 an 18-wheeler stopped in front of the tracks because the materials it was carrying required the driver to stop at all railroad crossings. The stop went unacknowledged by another driver of an 18-wheeler who crashed into the stopped rig, killing one driver.

Some blame the exempt signs leading up to the railroad crossing on both the east and westbound lanes for causing confusion in the area. Some vehicles like school and coach buses are required to stop at the tracks while 18-wheelers are not required, but some companies still mandate that drivers do stop.
