The Acadiana Center for Youth in Avoyelles Parish is now open.

Governor John Bel Edwards cut the ribbon on the state’s new juvenile detention center this morning.

It will serve offenders between the ages of 14 and 20 and features classrooms and vocational education.

“It’s going to allow us to have the therapeutic model that we have actually tried to adhere to in these other institutions,” said Governor Edwards. “However, they were built more like prisons. For the up to 72 young people who are going to be residents here, it gives them a second chance to be good productive citizens. That’s what this is about.”
