The search for an escaped inmate had people who live in the area on alert. Nicole Credeur is a mother of five who just moved to the area.

“It’s very alarming,”Credeur said.”I just moved here Friday and someone already escaped from the jail.”

While she and her son were outside, deputies were searching the nearby area for escaped inmate Markell Jones.

Over at the corner of Saint Antoine and Olivier Street, Joseph Shelvin woke up to deputies right outside his front yard, searching for Jones.

“I was outside they asked me if I seen anyone running through the neighborhood,” Shelvin said. “I didn’t. They searched the cemetery with canines and went through the whole area and they didn’t find anything.”

Shelvin now has questions about Jones’s escape and about his safety.

“We’re trying to find out how (Jones) you getting away. We don’t understand that part,” Shelvin said.

“It’s a concern because of safety measures for deputy and inmates. You never know what’s going to happen and how they intend to escape,” Shelvin said.

Jones was  recaptured several hours later, and has now been booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.
