In Opelousas, the police department is taking crime head-on, under new direction and with a bit of help from the parish.

Police Chief Martin McLendon is new to the position but says his department is serious about fighting crime.

Tuesday, the department, working with the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office seized heroin, crystal meth, and weapons off the streets.

McLendon says the partnership is important for the citizens of Opelousas and the parish.

“It was a joint effort between the two departments and this is a clear indication of when law enforcement is working together that we’re able to remove drugs and weapons off the streets of Opelousas and St. Landry Parish,” Chief McLendon said.
