Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office has responded to calls regarding possible mail theft from mailboxes in a couple of areas of Vermilion Parish in recent weeks.

During the last couple of weeks, the Sheriff’s Office received calls of checks being stolen from mailboxes, as well as incidents where packages left by delivery services were stolen from the homeowner’s front door.

“These thefts are crimes of opportunity and can occur within a minute of a person seeing the packages,” said  Mike Couvillon.

Residents should track packages to see when they will arrive, if they cannot be home during that time, arrange for a family member or neighbor to watch for the packages to be delivered.

Sheriff Couvillon said mail theft also can lead to identity theft and urges residents to check their mailboxes daily.

“Be aware of what is coming to your mailbox and remove those items as quickly as possible,” he said.

Finally, Sheriff Couvillon says that if you believe that your mail has been stolen, you should immediately contact your local police as well as the postal inspector.
