According to DOTD, Wednesday and Sunday are the busiest travel days of the year.

There will be more than 90,000 vehicles traveling on I-10 per day, so by stopping construction DOTD is minimizing the risk of large accidents and backups.

DOTD is stopping construction at three major construction sites through the Thanksgiving Sunday.

Construction won’t be happening on the interstate between I-49 and Breaux Bridge and from Henderson to the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge.

There will also be no construction on Highway 90 at the Albertson Parkway interchange in Broussard.

“A major accident could hold up traffic for hours. I mean if it’s on I-10 you could create a six-hour delay. You know, and with increased traffic, the accidents can be more severe. With the mixture of trucks, you can have more fatalities and injuries. A much more severe accident because there are so many vehicles out there,” explained DOTD District Engineer Administrator Bill Oliver.

If you find yourself stuck in traffic over the holiday weekend you can download DOTD’s free 511LA.ORG app which gives you road conditions while you’re driving handsfree.

DOTD has also partnered with the Waze App to help drivers get notified of problems on the roads by other users who can report on the App.

Work will pick back up again at those three major road construction sites at 6 am on Monday morning.
