Drone video taken by those returning to areas hit by Hurricane Michael shows a devastated landscape littered with destroyed buildings and debris.

Michael’s fierce winds and storm surge battered the Florida Panhandle as it came ashore Wednesday near Mexico Beach. The town received significant damage with rows upon rows of homes and businesses seemingly wiped off their foundations and reduced to rubble.

Drone footage below shows some of the damage sustained in Panama City Beach. Which also took a direct hit from the storm. A school gymnasium was one of the structural casualites caused by the storm.

The principal says of the scene, “It was heartwrenching. I know what the school means to our kids and our community. And to see that type of devastation… it’s a tough situation.”

At least two people were killed as Michael made its way through the Southeastern United States. As cleanup work begins, officials fear the death toll will rise. The hurricane has been called the most powerful to hit the continental U.S. in over 50 years.
