A Lafayette Parish School board member says the school system is facing a major problem with students attending school outside of their zones without appropriate approval.

“This problem has become more serious because families living out-of-zone are purchasing and/or acquiring utility bills that do not belong to them,” says District 9 board member Jeremy Hidalgo. “These bills, along with other fabricated documentation, are being submitted to the school system as a means of ensuring that their child is enrolled in a school of their choosing, one for which they are not zoned. Not only is this wrong, but this practice is putting undue and unnecessary pressure on several school campuses in our district.”

He says the school system has dealt with this issue for years but it has become problematic, and it is negatively impacting schools. The school system is currently auditing enrollment at impacted schools around the district.

Hidalgo is asking if you know anyone attending a school they are not zoned for to call (337)521-7019, you will remain anonymous.
