Mamou High School’s gym is getting a makeover. Two floods that were one year apart destroyed the gym’s floor. The school is working to make the new gym flood proof.

The 2016 flood caused some damage to the original floor. Another flood in April 2017 destroyed it.

“Fun to finally get something new,” basketball players Brianna Thibodeaux and Christiny Giddens said.

Principal Liz Chatelain added, “When the flood occurred the gym was pretty much submerged(with water). It began to buckle and wear on an already worn out floor.”

The new floor will cost $145,000. In addition to having a rubber surface, the court will be raised six inches to further prevent future flood damage.

Work is expected to be finished around October, just in time for basketball season.

“I’m looking forward to winning more games and more fans coming out to see the gym and experience it with us,” Thibodeaux and Giddens said.

Mamou High is selling pieces of the old wooden gym floor to raise money for the school. Call the school for more information on how to buy a piece of that floor.
