The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office says residents are getting calls from IRS scammers in heavy volume this week.

"The scams are continuing in the Acadiana area.  Local residents are receiving calls from a (805) 521-4229 number reporting to be the IRS.  The call advises the victim that the IRS will seize their assets and have them arrested by local law enforcement agencies for fraudulent information on their tax returns," the spokesman said. "They are advised to contact the (805) 521-4229 number to make arraignments to correct the problem and avoid arrest.  Persons receiving these calls should never give personal or financial information over the telephone."

The IRS will not call you demanding payment. The IRS always sends letters about problems with tax returns. The IRS will never call you demanding payment and threatening arrest.

If you want to know if there is really a problem with your taxes, the IRS recommends you hang up and call them at 800-829-1040.
