The ASSIST Agency has funds to help Jefferson Davis Parish residents who are struggling financially due to emergency situations.

“The funds are available to give a “hand-up” to those who need to recover from a temporary setback," said states Edna Semar, ASSIST Agency’s Community Services Director. "Money is available to help with utilities, rent or mortgage. The funds cannot pay for deposits or reconnections.”

To be eligible the applicant must live in Jefferson Davis Parish, have experienced a recent emergency situation, and meet eligibility requirements. Emergency situations must have documentation to confirm the need.

“We do outreach in Fenton on the second Tuesday of every month at the Fenton City Hall, 712 Third Avenue," said Semar The next one will be on August 8, 2018, from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm. We are in Welsh on the third Tuesday of every month at Welsh Town Hall, 201 South Elms St. The next one will be August 15, 2018, from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm.  For an appointment in either Fenton or Welsh, call our Jennings office at 337-824-7800.  We will see walk-ins if time permits, so it is best to make an appointment.”

“If someone is facing a disconnect notice or eviction, it is important to contact the office as soon as the notice is received," added Semar. "It takes 10-14 business days to process the application. Waiting until the day before means we will not be able to help.”

Funds for the assistance are made available by the United Way of Southwest Louisiana. If you believe you may qualify for assistance, call the ASSIST Agency at 337-824-7800 for further information.
