A seven-week-old girl has died from multiple injuries consistent with Shaken Baby Syndrome, according to medical examiners.

The baby died at 8:04 p.m. last night after being taken off of life support.

James Ray Miller, 32, the baby’s father, was arrested by Jennings Police on Monday, July 23, on a charge of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and booked into the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail. His bond was set at $500,000.

Jennings Police Chief Danny Semmes said the child’s mother was at work when the incident occurred and she is not a suspect.

The child was transported to a Jennings hospital earlier this week and later flown to Women’s and Children’s Hospital in New Orleans, according to Semmes. She was diagnosed with bleeding on her brain, a broken tibia, a lacerated liver and broken ribs, according to medical examiners.

Semmes said pending results of the autopsy, if ruled homicide, the charges will be upgraded to first-degree murder.
