A federal judge has granted the Advocate and KATC TV 3’s request to intervene in a civil lawsuit that stemmed from the Iberia Parish death of Victor White. The two media outlets seek the release of the settlement amount reached in March in the federal lawsuit filed on behalf of White’s surviving minor child.  Magistrate Judge Patrick Hanna granted the intervention on Thursday and called for attorneys in the case to file briefs on their arguments. Scott Sternberg, on behalf of the Advocate and KATC TV 3, said in court that Louisiana courts have long held that settlement checks are public record.  Carol Powell Lexing, on behalf of White’s child and the mother of the child, Shandell Bradley, argued that releasing the settlement amount would be disruptive to the child’s life. Hanna’s decision could come as soon as mid-August. Capital City Press and KATC sue to unseal Iberia Sheriff-Victor White settlement
