A man in a wheelchair went on a stabbing rampage Thursday night in the French Quarter.

According to police, a vehicle approached the intersection of Exchange Place and Iberville Street where Keith Martin, 56, was in his wheelchair in the middle of the intersection. Martin began stabbing the hood of the vehicle, according to the report.

A person was crossing the street at that time when Martin turned his wheelchair and stabbed the victim in the chest. Police say the victim in the car began to pepper spray Martin. He then fled the scene in his wheelchair.

A third victim and a New Orleans EMS observed the situation and intervened. Martin did not comply when he was instructed to drop the knife.

An NOPD officer on scene gave multiple verbal commands to drop the steak knife in his hand. Martin did not comply, according to the report.

The officer used a stun gun to subdue Martin.

Additional officers on scene disarmed and handcuffed the suspect. At that time, Martin spit on one of the victims, according to the report.

The victim who was stabbed in the chest was transported to a hospital.

The suspect was evaluated at a local hospital before being booked into jail.
