There is a vigil tonight for a woman who was killed by her ex-boyfriend, according to police.
Police received a complaint of a shooting at 11:44 a.m. yesterday on West Ibert Street in Franklin. Officers arrived and discovered Kenneth Smith Jr., 30, dead from a gunshot wound and April Charles, 36, with two gunshot wounds. Police say Charles was transported by Acadian Ambulance to a local hospital, where she died from her injuries.
Through the investigation, it was discovered that Smith shot the victim before shooting himself, according to investigators.
Tonight, at 6 p.m., a vigil to remember April will be held at 111 Blakesly, Lot 25, in Franklin. A representative from Chez Hope (a domestic violence shelter) will be the guest speaker. The vigil is open to the public.
According to KWBJ, in May, April Charles filed a temporary restraining order (21 days) against Smith for alleged domestic abuse. Charles was granted a protective order in June for six months ordering Kenneth Smith to stay away and avoid all contact with Charles.
Charles had three children and shared a son with Smith who was granted full custody of the child with unsupervised visitation rights to the mother.
