A Ville Platte summer program for children is growing. The Girls and Boys Place is in its third year. That growth is thanks to community donations.

You’ll find lots of happiness and excitement at the Ville Platte Girls and Boys Place. There are dozens of activities like Zumba, cooking, and games.

"I met a lot of friends," Makayla Freeman said. "It’s a positive place to come during the summer. I learned new things that I didn’t know and I have fun."

That’s the exact goal of the program.

"This club is a place to expose them to things they otherwise would not be exposed to," Mayor Jennifer Vidrine said.

The program isn’t new to the area. However, the facility is.

"We started getting so many children, we outgrew the building and we needed more space," Vidrine said. "Everything here is from donations and registrations. Everything people donate stays in this club to help our children here. "

With more than a hundred children in the program, Mayor Vidrine says the Girls and Boys Place will help mentor and guide children.

"The kids won’t be negative during the summer now," Freeman said.

"They’ll come over here and have a positive summer. They’ll go back and tell their family members what they did and one of their family members would want to come back."
