The St. Landry Parish District Attorney’s Office will help decide if any charges will be filed in this weekend’s shooting in Port Barre.

A 24-year-old father was outside smoking a cigarette when his two-year-old son found a loaded, read-to-fire pistol in the console of his dad’s truck and shot himself in the leg.

The child was treated and released from a local hospital that same day.

Police Chief Deon Boudreaux said he has looked at the law, but is not certain any were broken. He said he’s meeting with DA officials for assistance in interpreting Louisiana law and to make a decision. The DA’s office would be prosecuting any charges, so he reached out to include them in the decision, he said.
