A project contemplated by Rayne officials for almost 30 years is finally underway.
Officials say they were finally able to pay for the $700,000 pump station upgrade through grants and a low-interest loan.
Construction is expected to finish by December.
"The project will change out the pumps here so that the sewage can be pumped all the way to the sewage plant, which is in the northwest side of town, and bypass that manhole that is overflowing during rainfall," said city engineer Tim Mader.
