UPDATE: The Lafayette City-Parish Council gave the green light for a new fire district to serve the parish’s unincorporated areas.

The council will next consider a property tax to fund the new fire district. If approved, a tax proposition could be on the ballot by December at the earliest.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The Lafayette City-Parish Council will consider a resolution to create a new fire district.

If approved by the council, the public will have a chance to provide input at the next meeting on June 19.

If the district is approved, council members will then consider a property tax to fund the district.

Voters could have their say on that as early as December 8.

"Those funds, if it passed, will help with response times," said Kevin Naquin, LCG Chairman Dist. 1. "So the goal is to protect the unincorporated areas and provide fire protection and safety for their family and their businesses and their loved ones like we do in Lafayette and surrounding areas."
