Men and women who died while serving in the United States military are being remembered throughout the weekend, and some fallen heroes are being remembered through music.

The Lafayette Concert Band played patriotic tunes on Sunday at Bayou Church.

The concert paid tribute to Korean war veterans.

Those people gave their last full measure of devotion, as Abraham Lincoln put it, in defense of our country and our ideals," said Lafayette Concert Band Director Gerald Guilbeaux.

A memorial ceremony was held Saturday morning at the VFW building in Duson.

Among the attendees was Congressman Clay Higgins, who talked about the duty of Americans to honor the country’s service members.

"Perhaps consider what a sobering responsibility it is to be an American, what a blessing, and at the same time, what a tremendous responsibility, you know, to stand beneath the glory of that flag and to reflect upon our nation and how it was born and what it cost, you know, to be free," said Higgins.
