Deputies with the State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating a house fire that injured a 1-year-old in Iberia Parish.

Deputies say that the fire occurred around 1:00 am at a home on Church Street in Jeanerette. A 14-year-old resident told deputies that he was sleeping in a room with his 1-year-old sister and awoke to the smell of smoke and saw a fire on the mattress.

The 1-year-old girl, according to deputies, received 2nd-degree burns to her head, arms, and legs as a result of the mattress fire.

She was taken to a Galveston, Texas hospital for treatment.

An investigation determined the fire began where a cell phone had been lying on the bed while plugged into an outlet. Detectives say the cause is still undetermined but they have not ruled out the possibility of electrical malfunction due to cell phone charging.

The investigation is still ongoing.
