U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy visited TM Landry College Preparatory Academy in Breaux Bridge today.
In the afternoon, the senator also took a boat tour of the Atchafalaya Basin with the Louisiana Crawfish Producers Association.
TM Landry is the prep school whose videos of students celebrating their acceptance into prominent universities have gone viral.
During his visit, the senator learned about the school’s longer school days and longer school year, and about the staff’s expectations of the students. He said he wants to learn why the program is working so well, so some of those points can inform public policy.
"From what i understand from the principal, they actually want kids who kind of come from a disadvantaged background," Cassidy said. "He said the first five kids he accepted all had criminal records. so that’s a different type of a student–a tougher student."
