One Louisiana couple is facing charges in connection with a crash that killed a 5-year-old girl in Ascension Parish earlier this month.

On Saturday, troopers arrested 31-year old Angela Gaudet and 35-year-old Joey Gaudet. Both are from Gonzales.

State police say Joey initially told troopers he was driving and trying to make a left turn off a Louisiana highway on April 7 when he hit the truck to which Addisyn Teekell, of Baton Rouge, was riding.

Joey allegedly claimed Angela was the passenger.

Troopers say Addisyn was properly restrained at the time of the crash and sustained serious injuries. She was transferred to a Baton Rouge hospital where she later died. Her driver sustained minor injuries.

As the investigation continued, a trooper noticed Joey and Angela’s injuries were not consistent with the seating positions they were claiming, a state police spokesman says.

The trooper then collected evidence and witness statements, allegedly confirming Angela was the driver at the time of the crash.

The spokesman says toxicology results also confirmed that Angela was impaired.

Angela was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail for vehicular homicide, 10 counts of vehicular negligent injuring, aggravated obstruction of a highway of commerce, obstruction of justice, driving under suspension, no inspection sticker, and 4 counts of no child restraints.

Joey was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail for obstruction of justice and injuring public records.
