State Police investigating fatal crash involving a bicyclist near Sulphur

State Police say they are investigating a fatal crash involving a bicyclist near Sulphur.

Troopers say that they responded to a two-vehicle crash on Monday, April 9 involving a bicycle. The crash occurred on U.S. Hwy 90 near Choupique Road west of Sulphur. 

State Police say that 34-year-old James Brooks was traveling east on U.S. 90 on his bicycle when he was struck from behind. According to Troopers, Brooks was riding his bike in the middle of the eastbound lane.

State Police say that at the time of the crash Brooks’ bicycle was not properly lighted and that he was wearing dark colored clothing. 

Brooks was pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Brooks was not injured and has not been charged.

Toxicology samples were obtained and have been submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.
