Jubilee of the Word Marathon kicks off today in St. Martinville

WATCH LIVE: The Diocese of Lafayette will have 24- hour live coverage of the Jubilee of the Word Marathon beginning April 4th through Sunday, April 8th at 4:30 pm.

A 100-hour public Bible reading will help celebrate the 100-Year Anniversary of the Diocese of Lafayette Fete-Dieu du Teche will host the Jubilee of the Word Marathon in the Town Square of St. Martinville beginning today at 12:30 pm and concluding on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 8 at 4:30 pm. 

Organizers expect the event to draw more than 3000 people to come and "marinate" in the Word of God. 

Bishop Douglas Deshotel will begin the event by reading the opening chapters of the Book of Genesis on Wednesday, April 4, while Bishop Emeritus Michael Jarrell will conclude the reading on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 8 at 4:30 p.m.  Bishop Glen Provost of the Diocese of Lake Charles will also join the celebration by reading on Thursday, April 5 at 3:30 p.m.  300 lectors from churches throughout the Diocese will take 20-minute shifts, reading the Bible non-stop, cover to cover.

The Diocese of Lafayette officially celebrates 100 years as a diocese this year and to celebrate the event the Holy Bible will be read publicly from cover to cover without pause in the square of the Diocese of Lafayette’s oldest church parish, St. Martin de Tours. 

The Church parish was canonically erected in 1765.

 In addition to English, selections of the Bible will be read in French, Italian, German, Spanish, Vietnamese, Hebrew, Latin and Greek.
