UPDATE: Lafayette firefighters are on the scene of a commercial fire at Tampico Restaurant, 5713 Johnston Street.

The fire damaged the kitchen, patron area, and the roof. The fire is out.

A Lafayette Fire Department spokesman says employees called 911 reporting a fire in the kitchen. When firefighters arrived on scene, smoke was coming from the roof. Crews entered the building and discovered the fire in the exhaust system and attic space. The fire was contained to kitchen and space above. The seating area sustained heavy smoke damage.

The spokesman said employees indicated they were heating up grease in a pot and it ignited. The heat from the flames ignited grease buildup in the exhaust system. No injuries were reported, and the investigation continues into the fire incident.
