NEW IBERIA, La. — One person is dead and another is in custody following a shooting Monday evening in New Iberia, police said.

Officers with the New Iberia Police Department responded around 5:30 p.m. to the 200 block of French Street, where they learned three individuals had been shot.

One victim was taken to a local hospital by a private vehicle, while a second victim was transported by Acadian Ambulance in critical condition. A third victim declined medical treatment. Police said the second victim later died at the hospital.

During the investigation, detectives determined that the individual transported by private vehicle was a suspect. Authorities said the shooting stemmed from an argument between the suspect and another individual. The victim who died was shot while sitting in a vehicle occupied by four other people, including a child and a woman.

Police arrested 22-year-old Jasiah Deontae Lewis in connection with the shooting. He was booked into the Iberia Parish Jail on one count of first-degree murder, four counts of attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and illegal possession of a stolen firearm.

Lewis’ bond has been set at $4.15 million. The investigation remains ongoing.
