The annual community sock drive is underway in Jeanerette.

Community members are invited to drive up and drop off new socks at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Street and Monnot Street in Jeanerette from until 6 p.m. this evening.

The state’s newly designated Railroad Avenue Historic Cultural District in Jeanerette, in collaboration with the nonprofit organization Sock’n It!, is hosting the annual Curb-Side Sock Drive in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

Since 2016, Sock’n It! has inspired hope by providing new socks to individuals displaced by manmade and natural disasters, as well as those experiencing challenging economic times.

Last year, the community sock drive collected more than 4,500 pairs of new socks, which were distributed to shelters housing California wildfire evacuees, communities impacted by hurricanes and flooding, and warming stations serving individuals seeking refuge from freezing temperatures.

“Because we care, we share a pair,” said Laura Brown, one of the community’s organizers. “Socks are the most requested item in shelters.”
