With the freezing temperatures expected in Acadiana, it's important for you to be prepared. Below are some tips.

1) Heat your home safely
-Use electric space heaters with automatic shut off switches.

-Make sure to keep space heaters away from anything flammable like curtains or blankets. Give them at least 3 feet apart from each other.

-Do not use extension cords to plug in the heaters only plug them directly into electrical outlets.

-Do not use stoves and ovens to heat your home.

2) Pipes
-Frozen water expands pipes, which could cause them to burst.

-To prevent this, leave cabinets under kitchen and bathroom sinks open. The recommendation is to not leave your faucets dripping during a hard freeze

-Make sure all hoses are disconnected from outside faucets.

3) Cars
-Make sure to build extra time to warm it up. Turn your heater on low

-Do not use hot or boiling water to de-ice your windshield. The frozen glass could shatter because of the extreme temperature change.

-You can make your own de-icer spray using rubbing alcohol and water.

-Before going to bed you can spray your windshield with a vinegar and water solution. This will prevent frost and ice. If your'e in a hurry in the morning, the same mixture will melt the ice right off.
