According to the Abbeville Meridional, Eunice Elementary School's updates have been halted by the weather, meaning the repair work will not be ready in time for the new school year.

Claudia Blanchard, school system director of operations, said the project was started about a year ago and that the project has run into its fair share of delays, including bad weather and a fire.

The original project plans included replacing three roofs at Eunice Elementary School and one at Eunice Junior High School.

The board approved the roof project in August 2018; on the second day of school that same month, a fire damaged the classroom and thereby delayed the reparations.

An administration building flooded in December as well. Both incidents caused portable classrooms and restroom facilities to be installed at the school.

Blanchard said the project is "about 80 percent there."

The delays have caused the budget for the projects to increase as well; the total now stands at $1.5 million.

Blanchard is not rushing anything "because I need it to be done right."
