Concordia Parish Sheriff's Deputy shot in Vidalia

Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations/Alexandria Field Office responded to a Concordia Parish Sheriff's Deputy being shot in Vidalia.

The shooting happened around 12:15 p.m.

Police say the investigation revealed that CPSO and the Vidalia Police Department responded to the River Manor Apartments in Vidalia to locate an armed robbery suspect. One police arrived, deputies encountered Kaleb Melton, 21, of Vidalia.

During the course of the interaction, gunfire was exchanged; as a result, Melton and a deputy were both shot.

CPSO said the deputy, Walter Mackel, received moderate to severe injuries and was transported to University Medical Center in Jackson, MS. He remains in stable condition.

Melton was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
