Two generations that work together.
"I almost always did follow my dad since I was way younger,” remembers Bernard Lewis III.
“Honestly, my entire life I wanted to go to the Superdome with my dad,” says Michael Courville.
At Carencro High, the football program is headed by Tony Courville and supported by defensive line coach Michael Courville. " I get to see my dad on a regular basis, and we both work toward a common goal, him and I working together has been a blessing,” explains Michael.
People at Golden Bear games see them together, see their names in the program, and yeh, hiring family… can be hard. " I think it was more on him because he didn't want to be part of the team because of me,” explains Tony. “Because of the last name, similar last name. He wanted to earn it. And he has. "
Up a bit to Opelousas, and there are father and son electricians---
Bernard Lewis Jr., the father; and Bernard Lewis III, the son. I ask Bernard, Jr. who is the better electrician. “I have more experience than he does,” he says, “but he's getting there and he's good."
Dad leads by example and has passed along a solid code by which to live. “The one thing he always tells me,” shares Bernard III, “is the job has your name on it; so as long as you do it well, your name will carry well."
A lot of kids couldn't do it.
A lot of adults couldn't do it.
"I'm truly blessed and to see him on a daily basis, to interact with him on a daily basis, to work with him on the passion we share football, it’s awesome,” smiles Tony Courville.
So for those fathers and sons who do get to work shoulder-to-shoulder?
“Oh, it's wonderful. It is great,” adds Bernard Lewis, Jr. “We have our disagreements, but at the end of the day, I wouldn't have it any other way. Yeah."
