His name is Brooks Badeaux, once upon a time—he was Teurlings Catholic baseball standout, the class of 1994.
Jump to 26 years to 2020… and Brooks Badeaux is—as of two days ago—the new head baseball coach of the Rebels.
“it’s good to be back home,” smiles Badeaux. “I’m excited about the new challenge; just looking forward to embracing the whole spirit of the school and keeping the baseball program where it is, raising it actually.”
Raising a program that has already won eight state championships, including five of them under former coach Mike Thibodeaux-- will be the challenge. “Absolutely, and that’s what I say: the standard has always been high here; it’s never wavered as long as I’ve known,” says Badeaux. “My job is to help the kids and maintain that standard and raise it.”
He was a standout in high school. A star at Florida State. Then a successful pro career with the Tampa Rays that got him oh-so-close to the major leagues.
And now Badeaux is home. Home again.
“I pretty much grew up here,” says Badeaux wistfully, as he slowly looks across the Teurlings campus. “You played for my dad—my dad was coaching here in the seventies. Grew up here. Jed Hebert was my idol growing up. Now he’s working here. Just so many memories.”
He’s coached international ball and continues to work with baseball and softball players in Acadiana.
And Badeaux says his Rebel teams will play hard for a full game and never take a play off. “The scoreboard never dictates the standard. The tradition at Teurlings dictates the standard.”
So, the words…the title…and the name all put together? Teurlings Head Baseball Coach Brooks Badeaux? How does that sound to him?
“It sounds good. It’s where I need to be. You said it earlier. It’s where I need to be at this moment, and it’s a great opportunity.”
