While you're getting an early start on Christmas shopping, you might want to think about shopping for children in need too.
The Marine Toys for Tots Program collects new, unwrapped toys during October, November, and December and distributes them to less fortunate children.
Here's how the program works: families who cannot afford Christmas gifts can apply to receive toys for their children. Drop off locations are set up across the region, and anyone can drop off new, unwrapped toys suitable for children 0-14 years old.
Last year, around 26,000 toys were collected and distributed to around 5,600 children in Acadiana.
Close to 500 or 600 toys have already been collected, and the goal is to reach beyond last year's mark. The Marines hope to provide gifts for 10,000 children by December 19.
To make that goal a reality, the agency says they need businesses to get involved by becoming a designated drop off spot for Toys for Tots. Around 50 locations in Acadiana are already set up, but more are needed.
