An Auburn University gymnast is recovering after an unfortunate landing at Friday’s NCAA Regional meet at LSU left her with serious leg injuries.
Senior Auburn gymnast Samantha Cerio was attempting the first tumbling pass of her floor routine when a bad landing effectively ended her gymnastics career.
Several reports say that Cerio dislocated both of her knees and broke both of her legs during the landing.
The Advocate reports that the meet was halted while paramedics attended to Cerio following the injury. She was carried from the stadium on a stretcher.
Cerio posted to her Instagram page on Sunday that Friday was her last night as a gymnast.
“Friday night was my final night as a gymnast. After 18 years I am hanging up my grips and leaving the chalk behind.”
Despite the injury, she adds that she is proud of the person she’s become through the sport.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the person that gymnastics has made me to become,” her post continues. “It’s taught me hard work, humility, integrity, and dedication, just to name a few. It’s given me challenges and road blocks that I would have never imagined that has tested who I am as a person. It may not have ended the way I had planned, but nothing ever goes as planned.”
