Two arrested in St. Martinville apartment shooting

ST. MARTINVILLE — UPDATE: The St. Martinville Police Department says that two people have been arrested in connection with Wednesday's shooting at an apartment complex.

Police say officers responded to an illegal discharge of a firearm at 2:39 am at Cypress Garden Apartments just off LA 353.

An argument in the parking lot of the complex reportedly led to the shots being fired. Police say the suspect, 28-year-old Amite Joseph Marshall Jr, allegedly fired a gun at the pavement during the argument.

According to the department, The bullet ricocheted off the concrete and struck the upper right thigh and fractured the femur of the victim. The victim, who has not been identified, was airlifted to Lafayette General Hospital. He is listed in stable condition.

Two people have been arrested and booked on the following charges:

  • Amite Joseph Marshall Jr., 28, with Aggravated 2nd Degree Battery.
  • Trae Thomas, 27, with Principal to Aggravated 2nd Degree Battery.

The shooting victim's younger brother says that "guns are being used like toys" at Cypress Garden Apartments.
