An Opelousas deputy city marshal has been arrested on a charge of domestic abuse battery after he allegedly punched his wife twice in the face during a physical altercation.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office

51-year-old Michael Shane Potter of Port Barre turned himself over to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office on Thursday.

On June 12, Potter’s wife reported to deputies that the two had been arguing all day Tuesday when she left her home and returned later that night. She says that when she returned she found Potter standing in their living room where he allegedly punched her in the face twice with a closed fist.

Deputies say that the wife began to defend herself when Potter grabbed his duty weapon and another gun and left the residence.

The wife received two small lacerations as a result of the incident but did not need medical attention.

The sheriff’s office says the wife was hesitant to report the incident because she did not want to embarrass the city marshal’s office because of her husband’s job title.

A warrant was issued for Potter’s arrest. Potter turned himself in on Thursday morning and was booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail.

His bond is set at $2,500.
