Rayne PD to hold active shooter training at Rayne High today

Posted: Updated:

If you hear gunfire around Rayne High today, there's no cause for concern.

Rayne Police say they will be conducting an active shooter training around the school that will include the use of training ammunition that sounds like gunfire.

An “active shooter” is a person(s) actively engaged in trying to kill people in a populated area.  This training will be scenario based and designed to be as realistic as possible, police say.

During the scenarios, officers will be responding to the school and using Simunition, which is a non-lethal training ammunition that shoots a wax-like projectile and makes a concussion noise.

These rounds will not pose any safety issues for the public. Safety officers will be positioned around the perimeter and the campus will be closed to the public during the training.

“I hope we never have to deploy officers to an active shooter incident, but our department will continue to train yearly to be ready for such a tragic event," Chief Carroll Stelly. "Whether it is a school, place of business or any residence in Rayne, The Rayne Police department will be ready to respond at a moments notice and eliminate the threat."
