Man, 31, gets 60 years for killing girlfriend

Posted: Updated:

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - A 31-year-old Louisiana man who admitted killing his 23-year-old girlfriend in November 2015 has been sentenced to 60 years.

The Caddo Parish District Attorney's Office says in a news release that Brett Wayne Burnley pleaded guilty Monday to manslaughter of Brittany Leann Green.

Prosecutors say Burnley went to a family friend's home and fired an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle at Green, hitting her three times.

Manslaughter generally has a 40-year maximum sentence. But Judge Brady O'Callaghan sentenced Burnley as a second-time habitual felony offender, and ordered him to serve the time without suspension or probation.

In Louisiana, it takes one previous felony conviction to be considered a habitual offender .

Burnley's prior convictions were both in 2010, for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and criminal mischief.
