Made in Acadiana: Gator Tail

Posted: Updated:

Gator Tail boats and motors are made for-- and in 'The Sportsman's Paradise.'

"The thing that sets our boat apart from something else on the market is that our boat can be used just about anywhere," said Kyle Broussard, president of Gator Tail Outboards. "It can be used in shallow water, it can be used in deep water, it can be used in mud."

Broussard co-founded Gator Tail with his father, Blaine Broussard, after what became a pivotal final semester of college.

"The design came about as my senior project at UL in mechanical engineering," said Kyle. "I wanted to design something that could be used rather than just a project."

Shortly after college, the outboard motor he designed stayed in the family garage, until one day when the family was headed out duck hunting, and the water was exceptionally low.

"We brought this out there the closing weekend of duck season and it went through the mud like nothing we had ever ran before," said Kyle. "And that's the day we said 'well, now we have something special, we need to look at doing something with it.'"

Over the years, there have been tweaks to the design and assembly process.

"I wanted something that was faster than what was out there before, something that was easier to maneuver, something that was much safer and more efficient," said Broussard.

Gator Tail is headquartered in Loreauville, and employs 45 people. The company manufactures and distributes products across the United States and even internationally.

"We like to have it all American made," said Blaine. "We've had opportunity to have it made cheaper overseas, but we stick with American. We stick with Acadiana too."
